Which team is in Salary cap hell???

The Jets cap situation pretty much became a national story while they searched for a new GM but meanwhile the New York Giants had to release a number of significant players to get 2 million under the projected 2013 cap and that is with TWENTY-TWO FREE AGENTS yet to be accounted for!

Agreed, the Giants, like all teams, have to make salary related decisions. Unlike us, at least they are not in quarterback hell.:(

The Giants have "earned" a pass from the national media by being a successful and honorable franchise.

For whatever reason, the Jets are treated like misfits.

Two important things to remember about our "Salary Cap Hell".

1. While sanchez's contract is terrible, and Harris' isnt any better, when you look at who we are "dumping" NONE of them are big contributors. Whats better releasing bradshaw, canty, etc....or eric smith, jason smith, BT, and Pace?

2. The only actual GM who was mentioned as thinking our cap was "hell" is Tom Heckert. You can find him collecting an unemployment check right now.

Reporters, especially national ones need twitter followers, page views etc...you get that by ripping teams like the Jets for being in salary cap hell, when they are in an enviable situation of being able to cut high priced, low production, older players and gain significant cap relief.

Far from Hell!

Giants won 2 Superbowls since 2007.

Their salary cap and free agency plan has worked.

Every team has players that become too expensive at some point in their contracts. It is just the nature of how contracts are structured. The Giants knew they were not going to keep Bradshaw past the 2012 season, so they drafted Wilson in the first round as his replacement. So losing Bradshaw is not really a big deal and saves them 4 million in cap space.

Plus when you have a franchise QB that is playing to the level of his contract, the overall roster situation always seems more stable.

eaglenj 02-07-2013 09:35 AM

I honestly think the Giants - Jets comparison is perfect evidence for anyone like SAR who think that the jets dont have talent, and that Sanchez wasnt the cause of our atrocious season.

The sanchez supporter constantly say how bad Tanny/Rex are and that our "terrible contracts" are what caused the team to suck....well lets take a REAL look at the Giants personnel.

Chris Canty for example was given a 6 year $42 million deal that resulted in 9 sacks with the giants and missed 15 games in 4 years due to injury.

For comparison, lets look at Calvin Pace, the brunt of incessant whining on this board. Pace also signed a 6 year $42 million deal and has 28 sacks as a Jet and missed 8 games.

Corey Webster signed a 6 year $43 million deal just to get torched all year last season. Is Cro a better signing there?

Kyle Wilson, widely referred to as a "draft bust" here has never missed a game in 3 seasons, while the excellent drafting by the Giants of Prince Amakmura has resulted in him missing 12 games in 2 years due to injury.

The difference here is that the Giants have a top QB who bails them out and WINS games for the team. It doesnt matter if he loses Nicks, because he makes Rames Barden look like an all pro (9 catches 113 yards in his 1 start).

This. Like the Giants, we have a handfull of guys that we need to dump in order to get under the cap. But the difference is the guys we need to dump won't be missed.

Bradshaw will be replaced fairly easily by the Giants. But Canty, Tuck, Snee, etc, are guys that are pretty damn good players. Losing some of them is going to hurt.

But it really comes down to the QB. They have Eli, we have dogsh!t. So they're still in better shape than us.

I would LOVE to have the Giants problems. Legitimate franchise QB and 3 studs (Nicks, Cruz and JPP) that need to be paid. Not to mention 2 SBs in the past 5 years. World-class HC too.

Giants will figure it out and remain competitive. They will have to make many more tough decisions. I think Tuck is a goner. And Osi isn't being re-signed (unless that is what they are making room for too).

I think Eli will also help them by re-doing his contract.

I just read an interesting article about the amount of cap adjustments that each team has this year. Didnt want to start another thread so I will throw it in here.

Team-by-team available cap adjustments for 2013

[Editor's note: The 2011 labor deal allows teams to carry over unused salary-cap space. Or to not carry it over. Listed below is the cap adjustment that is available to each team. Unless otherwise noted, the entire amount comes from available cap money that can be carried over. The Cowboys and Redskins have net cap reductions based on $5 million and $18 million in cap penalties, respectively, for the 2013 league year. These numbers do not reflect cap space but the amount of extra (or for the Cowboys and Redskins reduced) cap space over (or below) the unadjusted cap number, which is expected to be in the vicinity of $121 million per team.]

Eagles: $23.0 million.

Jaguars: $21.1 million ($19.5 million carryover).

Browns: $14.3 million.

Broncos: $14.1 million ($11.5 million carryover).

Chiefs: $14.0 million.

Seahawks: $13.2 million.

Titans: $12.8 million.

Bengals: $10.2 million ($8.5 million carryover).

Buccaneers: $10.1 million ($8.5 million carryover).

Bills: $9.8 million.

Vikings: $9.6 million ($8 million carryover).

Packers: $7.0 million.

Patriots: $5.6 million.

Dolphins: $5.3 million.

Raiders: $4.5 million.

Panthers: $3.6 million.

Cardinals: $3.6 million.

Colts: $3.5 million.

Jets: $3.4 million.

Bears: $3.2 million.

Saints: $2.7 million.

Texans: $2.4 million.

Steelers: $1.4 million ($758,000 carryover).

Falcons: $1.3 million ($300,000 carryover).

Ravens: $1.1 million.

Giants: $1 million.

Chargers: $995,000.

49ers: $859,000.

Lions: $466,000.

Rams: $247,000.

Cowboys: minus-$2.67 million ($2.33 million carryover).

Redskins: minus-$13.8 million ($4.27 million carryover).

***Again, this isnt the amount of total free cap space, but the amount that the teams can carry over and add to this years $121 million.***

Right, everything the Giants do is good, the Jets is bad, same old story with you.

That remains to be seen. The Giants cap problems are cause for concern no matter how you slice it, they got to a Superbowl after an average to above average season and made a run, now the piper needs to be paid, talent will be lost, nobody knows how this could impact the team for continued success.

I agree. But their QB will ease the losses elsewhere.

Our QB sucks balls. So we're in worse shape because of it. And his contract makes things even worse.

In case you missed it, the Giants have won 2 recent Super Bowl titles.

They are doing something right.

Ray, the Giants have earned the benefit of the doubt. That is what happens when you win 2 SBs. That is the difference.

And they have the most important pieces in place. When you are great @ HC, QB, WR and DE you are in a pretty good position.

Hmmmmmm, so the Cowboys and Redskins got penalized for cheating?

Not really, they just tried to burry a bunch of money in the uncapped year and now they have to account for it.

Yea, they have a franchise QB and when they had a down year, they took a pass rusher, not a guard or RT.

The point Im making is that the Giants arent a bunch of cap wizards, they simply have found top tier players at the most valuable positions...QB and Pass Rusher and that can eradicate a LOT of other misses or bad contracts.

You of all people should know this since you see it first hand with your patsies. BB is lauded as great "draftnik" when the true facts show that he is far from a personnel genius. He simply understands, the more picks the better the odds.

Oh and he got lucky and found himself with the best QB of possibly all time to fix any mistakes they make.

The Giants have won 2 Super Bowls in the last 6 years. that's how you earn that respect. Also, having Eli Manning instead of Mark Sanchez helps.

Jets have also made the playoffs more than the Giants have the last 4 years, little known fact. Unfortunately, the one time the Giants got in, they won it. If the Giants weren't in a mediocre division in 2011, they'd be going 4 years and counting without the playoffs. Yet, they are the "model" franchise

The drama and success that surrounds the Giants is optimal as compared to how everything has played out with the Jets.

The only Jets pseudo Superbowl victory is the playoff win against the Pats in 2010. It's a satisfying consolation, but not the same as winning the big game.

In the last 5 years, the Giants have won 2 Division titles, 2 NFC Conference championships and 2 Super Bowl titles.

And you are comparing the Jets to that success?
