February 27, 1977

Keith Richards was arrested at Toronto’s Harbour Castle Hotel, after an ounce of heroin was found following a raid of his hotel room by 15 Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Richards, who was charged with possession with intent to traffic, faced seven years to life in prison. Bail was set at $25,000 (£14,705).

The case was a delicate one, because Margaret Trudeau, wife of then-Prime Minster, Pierre Trudeau, was among those partying with the Stones at the time. A solution arrived when a blind woman, for whom Richards had often arranged rides to Stones concerts, approached the judge to vouch for his character. Richards was given a one year suspended sentence and a year's probation, and ordered to play a benefit concert for the blind.

The Grateful Dead begin a four night run at the Fillmore West. Its the first time live music is recorded in 16 track. The Dark Star from Live Dead, the one that turned millions into Heads, was played this night 44 years ago. All four shows were released in a box set in 2005.

4th March 1966, John Lennon's statement that The Beatles were 'more popular than Jesus Christ' was published in The London Evening Standard. "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. We’re more popular then Jesus now; I don’t know which will go first, rock ‘n’ roll or Christianity. Jesus was alright, but his disciples were thick and ordinary." Christian groups in the US were outraged resulting in some states burning Beatles records. Lennon later apologised.

5th March 1983, Michael Jackson started a seven week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Billie Jean', his fourth solo US No.1, also No.1 in the UK. And on this day Jacksons album 'Thriller' went to No.1 for the first time on the UK album chart, it went on to become the biggest selling album of all time with sales over 50 million.

March 6th 1982, Tight Fit were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with their version of The Tokens hit 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight.' It was first recorded by its writer, Solomon Linda, and his group, The Evening Birds, in 1939. In 2004, the song became the subject of a lawsuit between the family of its writer Solomon Linda and Disney. The suit claimed that Disney owed $1.6 million in royalties for the use of 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' in the film and stage production of The Lion King. A settlement was reached for an undisclosed amount in 2006.

March 7th 1966, Tina Turner recorded her vocal on the Phil Spector produced 'River Deep Mountain High'. It went on to make No.3 in the UK but only No.88 on the US chart.

1974, Bad Company kicked off their first UK tour at Newcastle City Hall. The band was made up by ex members from Free, (Paul Rodgers & Simon Kirke), Mott The Hoople, (Mick Ralphs), and King Crimson, (Boz Burrell).

8th March 2009, A blue plaque in honour of The Who drummer Keith Moon was unveiled on the site of the Marquee Club in Soho, London, where in 1964 the band played the first of 29 gigs there. Fans on scooters turned up to pay tribute to Moon, who was 32 when he died of an accidental overdose in 1978. I was 14 years old,when Mott the Hoople played the palladium on broadway. First rock band ever to play a broadway theatre. Went with my mom and dad. All the freaks were out and my father kept calling the usher,it was a great show.Obviously after that my parents allowed me to go to concerts with friends instead,great memories

On 10th March 1973, Pink Floyd released their eighth studio album 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' in the US. It remained in the US charts for 741 discontinuous weeks from 1973 to 1988, longer than any other album in history.

Just saw Ian Hunter and the Rant Band a few weeks back at the City Winery. He still puts on a great show.
