Fantastic win over the Spurs tonight. I guess the 22-10 Knickerbockers aren't as much fun for you guys as regurgitating lame anti-Rex Ryan soundbytes from the media?

Ahh, things back to normal. Knicks playing D again and beating a good team.

That JR alleyoop was sick.

There's no such thing as a "must" win in early January, but this was a "need" win and the Knicks got it. When good teams go through "bad" stretches, they are .500 in a 10 to 12 game stretch and with a win against the Magic, the Knicks will be 5-5 since the end of their 5 game winning streak and that's a good thing.

They got to 10 games over and never lost that. Now, hopefully, they can get to 15 over and keep moving forward like good teams do. Play .650 ball until Felton and Shump gets back and then they can move back into .750 ball when everyone is healthy, like they were playing before Melo got first injured.

What's the ballpark for Shump's return? I know nothing has been official, but what about unofficial expectations?

Conservative estimate, mid February-after All Star break-ish.

Possibly, by the end of January begining of February.

I hope last night's win is a true sign they righted the ship because January & February are going to be the cushion months where the Knicks can pad their record.

March is going to be brutal with 18 games (most of any month this season), 10 road games, a killing 5 road games in 8 days, and 6 back-to-backs.

That's when they need everyone healthy so they can survive that and get ready for the playoffs with only 10 games in April.

Knicks have an interesting record breakdown thus far. They are 8-3 against would-be playoff teams in the Eastern Conference and 4-3 against would-be playoff teams in the West.

They are 5-0 against nonplayoff Teams in the East and 5-4 against nonplayoff teams in the West.

what's really impressive about the Knicks so far this year is that they've accomplished all of this without ever having the team at full strength.

no Shumpert, Amare just came back and is a long way from 100%, same for Camby, Sheed has been in and out, Kidd and Melo have missed a few games and Felton is gone for a month.

it will be hard for the Knicks to get everyone healthy at the same time, especially considering the age of some of the veterans. but you have to wonder how good this team can be with their top 8-9 players at or near full strength. the team's depth is incredible, combine that with a defensive mindset and tons of playoff experience, and this team could be a serious threat in May/June.

Grunwald did an excellent job supplying this team with depth in the off-season by signing reasonably priced veterans to cap friendly contracts (Kidd, Felton, Sheed, Thomas, Camby, Brewer). Melo's the only true superstar on the roster. Amare's past his prime and Chandy is an excellent role player but not a star.


Signing cheap vets who may not all be home runs but can all contribute. That's how you get depth. Mike Tanenbaum forgot how to do that.

Knicks were 0-4 against the Bulls in the regular season going into this game I think. I knew Ewing was dominant in this game but really Holy Cow. That's how you beat the Miamis and Chicagos you go for the jugular when they think they own you.

Man, that brings back memories. I was overseas at the time, stationed in South Korea and I saw that game Saturday morning (it was Friday night in the States).

I still can't understand why they traded Mark Jackson the following year for that stiff Charles Smith. Or that they didn't keep the X-Man.

Even though he broke my heart a few years later there is no question in my mind that Pat Riley is the best NBA coach of all time.

I despised him when he left, but he is a great coach. Better than Jackson.

The thing I give Riley most credit for is that he changed his system based on the personnel. He knew he couldn't go Showtime with the Knicks, so he decided to be a Pistons-like defensive team for the Knicks.

Too many coaches try to force the players to fit their system and get rid of good players because they don't fit.

Both those moves sucked. X-Man owned Pippen in that series and Mark Jackson was a dynamic playmaker. Knicks probably beat the Bulls in the '93 playoffs instead of choking in 6.

Agreed. Checketts and Grunfeld screwed up that mid 90s run. They didnt appreciate the need for a defensive specialist like X-Man. And Jackson gave them great balance.

And good win tonight. Need to accumulate these type of wins. Magic came to play and Nelaon was nuts out there. But Melo was Melo and scored 16 points in 4th while Magic scored 17.

And like I mentioned, 5-5 in their "bad" 10 game stretch which is a good thing. Now time to get 15 over .500

Have to say I agree with this comment 100%. The thing that sold me was that Knicks team. Outside of Ewing, they didn't have much talent. In my opinion that team overacheived every year and almost won a championship. Like you I hated what he did, but he is a great coach.
