I see what you are getting at in your post and I kind of agree. But I think the main reason why there aren't as many "arena rock" type of bands now are because there is such an abundance of divergent musical tastes/bands and that there really isn't a huge demand for it. People seem to prefer multiple, more intimate settings than the 50K arena jams of old. Again, JMO. |

I don't know if I said it before but Phoenix is one of my favorite bands post 2000s.

Good lord is that horrible. After 30 seconds of that twaddle, I just put down a deposit on a pied-ŕ-terre in the Castro District. ASIDE: What's wrong with the formatting? Last edited by Borgoguy; 02-11-2013 at 06:21 PM. |

It's obvious who's living in the past.... there are tons of great bands out today writing truly unique music. Phoenix is one of those bands.

That's some of the sappiest noddling I've ever heard. Truly, I'm surprised you dig it. As your contributions in The Jazz-Head Thread show, you're better than that. |

Seriously, just cause you old fogies can't hang with the new age music doesn't make it sonically bad either. It's good melody, original composition and style, the band is solid... you might not like it per say but that just means it's not your bag baby. I will say that the song Timmy posted is off their debut album (2000) which is not my favorite album and they are a lot different sounding from that now... which if you listened to the song I posted you'd see it's much different. But you are right, it's a bit pop. And you are also right that the song Timmy posted is not that good at all really. |

To address this "arena" topic, IMO that speaks more to other factors than the tired "bands were better years ago" cliche.
First of all, most people who enjoy live music have come to the realization that an arena is probably the worst place to see a band. Venues and sound setups have evolved immensely. Plenty of great bands out there now that don't play arenas, not because they can't, but because they don't want to sacrifice the quality of the show. Besides, who are these old bands selling out arenas? Crap like Bon Jovi, who only provide nostalgia for 30 and 40 something cheeseballs? Or great (former) acts like the Stones who charge $800 per ticket and do two shows? |
