UPDATED @ 9:50AM

JetsInsider.com has confirmed through multiple sources this morning that Jets WR Braylon Edwards has been arrested for DUI.

Details are still surfacing but what we know now is that Edwards was taken into custody early this morning after being pulled over in Lower Manhattan and blowing .16 on a breathalyzer which is double the legal limit.

Ironically the news comes only days after Edwards had one of his best games as a Jet against the Patriots on Sunday.

This is the first off-field incident that Edwards has had with the team after a dicey history in Cleveland prior to the Jets trading for him last season from the Browns.

Shortly after this news broke the Jets sent out a statement from GM Mike Tannenbaum regarding the incident.

“We are very disappointed in Braylon’s actions this morning. The Player Protect program is in place for our organization to prevent this situation. Braylon is aware of this program and showed poor judgement.

We are reviewing the information with the league and will impose the appropriate discipinary measures”

It will be interesting to see how the Jets actually handle this especially after Tannenbaum’s statement. Technically, the league likely won’t do anything regarding this until the actual incident is resolved in the courts which could drag on until after the season. This is also Edwards’ first strike regarding the NFL’s substance policy so a suspension by the league doesn’t even factor in.

The team though could levy a fine only or fine and suspend Edwards immediately based on the team’s player conduct policy.  However, with a huge AFC East match up this Sunday night against the 2-0 division rival Dolphins and Santonio Holmes out for two more weeks, the team would be a skeleton crew at WR with  only Jerricho Cotchery, Brad Smith and David Clowney left on the roster. The team could temporarily re-sign Laveranues Coles but he’d surely be rusty and it’s not even a lock that he’d come back.

Bottom line is that Edwards has put the team in a very precarious position. The timing couldn’t be worse as this type of distraction is the last thing the Jets needs after beating New England on Sunday and seemingly getting back on track.
