In Eric Mangini’s 37 games as head coach of the New York Jets, including the 37-16 loss to the Patriots in 2006 AFC wild-card round, the Jets have managed a lackluster 16-21 mark. Interestingly enough, the two more impressive wins during Mangini’s two-plus years with the team have come following bye weeks. On Nov. 12, 2006, following a Week 9 bye, the Jets defeated the Patriots 17-14 in Foxboro. The win bumped the Jets’ record to 5-4, and dropped the first-place Patriots to 6-3 on the season. Last season, the Jets followed up their Week 10 bye with a 19-16 overtime win over the Steelers at the Meadowlands. Both teams entered the matchup heading in entirely different directions, as the Jets were riding a continual freefall at 1-8, while the Steelers were sitting comfortably in the AFC hierarchy with a 7-2 record.

Simply put, Mangini has pushed all the correct buttons in preparing his team following byes. Sunday, Brett Favre will look to add to the ingredients of that success when the Jets square off against the Bengals at the Meadowlands. Dating back to the 2000 season, Favre’s post-bye week resume is not too shabby either. He led the Packers to a 6-2 record, while throwing 16 touchdown passes compared to only three interceptions in such games.

Here are Favre’s statistics in post-bye week games dating back to the 2000 season:

10/29/00- (28-20 loss v. Dolphins) 21-of-34, 194 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
