It has been a long season for the 49ers, who have already benched quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan and fired head coach Mike Nolan. With a 4-8 record, the once-proud franchise is one loss from clinching its sixth-consecutive losing season. Aside from a bumbling offense that has been hindered by poor offensive line play (43 sacks allowed, most in NFL) and a struggling quarterback (O’Sullivan: eight touchdowns, 11 interceptions), San Francisco’s troubles have been on a paper-thin secondary. The 49ers have surrendered 239 passing yards per game (28th in NFL) and now remain banged up. Cornerback Nate Clements, who has played in 12 games and has recorded two interceptions, did not practice today due to a thumb injury. Safety Michael Lewis, who is third on the team with 69 tackles, was held out today with an abdomen injury.

Cornerback Allen Rossum, who is the NFC’s third-leading kickoff returner (27.3 avg., one touchdown) did not practice due to an ankle injury.
