Florham Park, N.J.– They say that speed kills and that was never more apparent than last Sunday as the Raiders used their superior speed to dash around the edges and tare up the Jets defense. It may be too late to do anything about what happened last Sunday, but it’s never too late to look to improve in the immediate future and that’s exactly what the Jets are trying to do by signing Aaron Maybin to the 53-man active roster.
After a disappointing start to his career in Buffalo, the Bills severed ties with the former first-round draft pick, officially stamping him with the dreaded ‘bust’ label. The Jets briefly gave him new life when they signed him during training camp and it’s safe to say he came in and played above most peoples’ expectations. No one was surprised when Maybin made the initial 53-man roster, but many fans were angrily confused when the team turned around and cut him the following day to make room for waiver wire signings.

Everyone knows the Jets don’t have any one defensive player who excels at rushing the quarterback, so why wouldn’t the team give Maybin a chance to see if he can contribute in the one area this defense lacks the most? It’s a reasonable question, so reasonable in fact that it appears the team obviously revisited said question after getting torched by Darren McFadden. The Jets now realize they definitely needed to add speed at the outside linebacker position and maybe they were wrong and Maybin will be the answer they have been looking for all along.
Maybe.
Which is fitting of course since ‘Maybe’ is the nickname disgruntled Bills fans placed upon the former first-round draft pick. Unimpressed with his play, they called him ‘Maybe’ because they thought maybe one day he might flash the talent that got him drafted so high. When the Jets released him, many fans were left wondering maybe as well. Maybe the Jets were wrong. Maybe Aaron ‘Maybe’ Maybin is exactly the type of speed on the edge this defense needs to be complete. Of course there’s still the chance that maybe, Maybin is still too small to be effective in this league.
Maybe he does have the talent and ability this Jets defense needs. Maybe he doesn’t, But at least now we will finally have a definitive answer and be able to eliminate the question of maybe. Now Maybin gets a chance to prove to the Jets whether he can help this team. After this last chance there will be no more ‘Maybe,’ he’s either good enough or he’s not, but at least he’s getting his shot.
