Florham Park, NJ– The Jets ended their stay in Cortland last week and today they continued their training camp tour around the tri-state area. Today and tomorrow’s practices will be held at the Jet’s new headquarters in Florham Park, NJ. Practice was supposed to be open to the public both days, but because of this morning’s rain only VIP fans got to watch the relatively light practice.
The big news of the day was the scuttlebutt that carried over from yesterday involving rumors about two different players and their contract status. Yesterday morning, Tim Cowlishaw from the Dallas Morning News and a regular on ESPN’s “Around the Horn,” tweeted that he had a reliable source that told him the Jets and Darrelle Revis have agreed to terms with an announcement to come later in the week. Since this tweet was released there has been a flurry of people trying to debunk Cowlishaw’s tip. Going back and forth trying to decipher whose information is more reliable, is enough to make your head spin like the girl from, “The Exorcist.”
While no one seems to really know what to make of this Revis news, one thing is becoming clear and that is the fact that Revis is losing more and more leverage each day. The other news of the day is proof of just that and maybe even a message being sent to Revis from Jets management, unless of course they do have a deal worked out, but there are other reports saying the two sides are still $40 Million apart. Last night, hours after the Revis rumors popped up, more rumors began swirling around All-Pro center Nick Mangold being close to agreeing on an extension.
While both Rex and Mangold remained coy about the contract, there are no reporters out there searching to debunk this rumor, everyone seems confident that they are just putting the finishing touches on the deal. Everyone was talking about Mangold’s contract like it was a done deal, except Mangold and Rex Ryan. Ryan said, “That’s news to me, you know I think my understanding is we are close, but a deal hasn’t been done.” Mangold had even less to say, even if he did manage to say it in a typically creative and funny Mangold-like way.
As reporters rushed towards Mangold after practice Mangold knew exactly what was on everyones mind saying, “I’ll give you a quick one real quick, I’m not talking contract. I’ve been advised not to, anything else football I’d love to talk, but otherwise I’m not talking contract. You guys can fire away, but I’ll just be stone-faced.” And of course as Mangold predicted the reporters did fire away and as he promised he just simply responded, “Stone-face.”
What’s surprising about Mangold getting a new deal is the fact that just a couple weeks ago the Jets and Mangold announced they would be putting a halt on contract talks until the season was over. The fact that a deal is supposedly close to done, could be taken as the Jets trying to send a message to Revis. Thoughts are ranging from, now that the Jets aren’t focused on Revis they can turn their attention to other key teammates, to the Jets wanted to send a message that Mangold would get rewarded for showing up to camp despite not having a contract worked out. Whatever the reason the Jet players are certainly happy to have their All-Pro center taken care of.
Today’s practice was a light practice with little contact and no tackling so it’s easy to see why the focus of the talk was about the contracts, but there were a fair share of standout plays to keep the VIP guests entertained. Sanchez clearly struggled in the short amount of time he played in Carolina Saturday night, but he bounced back with a real solid practice today, rocketing the ball all over the field to different receivers. Twice during 11-11 drills Sanchez found Braylon Edwards for a 55-yard touchdown pass, as Edwards beat Kyle Wilson, who had solid coverage but couldn’t stop the perfectly placed passes. Sanchez finished practice with a extremely solid 11-11 drill, going 9-10 with one touchdown. The only incompletion came when Bryan Thomas jumped a screen route and dropped an easy pick six.
Nick Folk continued his impressive performance in camp as he ended the day 6-6 on FG’s. Kellen Clemens had another strong day of camp, making a bunch of good reads and solid throws including a 60-yard touchdown pass to Larry Taylor, the speedster you might of seen returning kickoffs for the Jets in their preseason games.
For fans that can’t get enough of Rex Ryan, and let’s be real, who can? Ryan had an interesting, yet typical Rex Ryan response when he was asked about comments made by one Tom Brady. Brady was on a Boston radio show when he was asked if he has watched, “Hard Knocks,” and what his take on it was. Brady said, “Honestly I haven’t turned it on. I hate the Jets, so I refuse to support that show… I’m sure it’s great TV, I’m glad people are liking it. But that’s just something that I have no interest in watching. I’d love to say a lot of mean things, but I’d rather not do that either.”
When Ryan was asked what he thought about Brady’s comments he provided just the type of answer everyone has come to expect from Ryan. Ryan said, “Hell, he knows we hate the Patriots, so what’s the difference? My brother (Rob Ryan former linebackers coach for Patriots) got a couple super bowl rings, he loves Tom Brady, I don’t have them so I don’t like Tom Brady. I respect him, but I don’t like him.”
What does Ryan think of Brady making such a brash comment? When he was asked Ryan simply said, “It’s great, hey, join the club. (laughing)”
