Florham Park, N.J.– Before the day even began the reporters gathered to cover the mini-camp practice were hit with a surprising change. Over the past few years the media that covers the Jets have gotten used to watching practice before talking to the players and coaches, but that all changed this morning when the reporters were told Rex Ryan would be addressing them before practice today. With that news intrigue immediately set in as everyone began to wonder what the reason for the change was, but ultimately Ryan confirmed the suspicions of most of the speculators.

“This is a little different, but we’re going to see how it works.” Ryan said, “I plan on doing this schedule even during the season just so I have more time to watch tape afterwards. So we’ll see how that kind of works.”

After the disappointment of last season and Ryan openly admitting that somewhere along the line he, “lost the pulse of the team,” he vowed to be more involved in offensive meetings and defensive game-planning and this change in schedule is the first piece of evidence proving just how serious he is about being more involved.

Being a head coach in the NFL is a delicate balancing act, a coach must delegate to other coaches, especially in regards to areas outside their expertise, but not so much that he loses the pulse of the team. Ryan is a defensive coach and always has been, but with Brian Schottenheimer being the casualty of the coaching staff last season Ryan knows if this team and offense don’t improve then it’s his head that could find itself on the chopping block.

The change in the schedule allows Ryan to watch practice and then jump directly into film study and attending meetings to offer his input when ever he feels it’s needed without the disruption of having to answer questions for the media. Who knows if this new schedule is a more efficient use of time, but it’s clear Ryan has every intention of making sure his finger-prints are all over every part of this team. If he’s going to go down, he’s going to go down swinging and it’s going to be his way.

Other News and Notes:

The Jets had 100% attendance today, Brandon Moore missed practice to attend his daughter’s nursery school graduation with the team’s blessing, but he did attend both morning and afternoon meetings. LaRon Landry was at practice, but worked strictly on conditioning and was held out of team drills. Ryan said he’s not sure about a timetable for Landry’s return, but did stress they knew they we’re going to have to wait awhile when they signed him.

This mornings injury list consisted of, Jeff Cumberland (Achilles), Jeremy Kerley (hamstring), Brandon Moore (hip), Royce Pollard (hamstring), Matt Slauson (shoulder), Patrick Turner (hamstring) all being listed as limited. Santonio Holmes (hamstring), DaMarcus Ganaway (hip), Bilal Powell (hamstring), Stephen Hill (hamstring), Brain Linthicum (quad), Jordan White (foot), Matthias Berning (knee), Bryan Thomas, LaRon Landry.

“This time of year, we have a lot of hamstring issues and we’ve had a lot of hamstring issues in the past. We have a bunch of them now, it’s not that concerning.” Ryan said, “The one year I forget how many we had, but it was like crazy. But we had none during the regular season so we’ll see if that’s the case. We’ve been pushing these guys hard in the weight room and on the field as well.”

The hamstring injuries aren’t anything to be concerned about, just a precautionary measure according to Ryan and that was obviously the case as Holmes, Ganaway and Powell were off to the side running sprints across the outside of the field and none of them seemed to have any issues running exceptionally fast. Turner and Kerley both participated in most of the team drills while DaMarcus Ganaway was limited to only a handful of team drills.

Quote of the Day:

As Aaron Maybin was jogging down the field with his teammates between drills he broke out into this mini-chant, “Get better, get better, get better… Feel that burn baby… Get better, get better, get better.”
