FLORHAM PARK, NJ – As reported earlier by JetsInsider.com, Jets Safety Jim Leonhard suffered a leg injury after a collision with WR Patrick Turner during practice today. More details on the injury have been surfacing since our first report and the news is devastating as JI has learned through multiple sources that Leonhard’s right tibia was fractured and he will miss the remainder of the season.
The news could not come at a worse time as the Jets are preparing to square off for the division lead against the hated Patriots and pass-happy QB Tom Brady on Monday night. Leonhard, the defensive captain who calls most of the schemes, is also the team’s top punt returner. Sources have confirmed that he will undergo surgery tonight at Morristown Hospital and his long term status will be updated next week. It’s a huge blow to the team which has been relatively injury-free since losing NT Kris Jenkins on opening day against the Ravens. Since then, the team has been one of the healthiest in the league.
With Leonhard gone, S Eric Smith move to his spot with Brodney Poole covering at FS. Prior to the injury, Smith and Poole platooned at the FS position. Also, look for S James Ihedigbo to get more reps with Leonhard gone.
UPDATE – Sat Dec 4th, 10AM: Leonhard’s fate is now official as the Jets announced that he has been placed on the injured reserve list. Team officials also announced that Leonhard underwent successful leg surgery last night and will be released from the hospital by Monday at the latest.
