What Is NFL Flex Scheduling? How and When Games Move

Every NFL season, a handful of kickoff times printed on the schedule in May turn out to be placeholders. A Sunday 1:00 p.m. game becomes a Sunday night game; a prime-time game drops back into the afternoon. That is flexible scheduling, and it runs on a published set of rules rather than on a whim.

NFL flex scheduling is the league’s procedure for moving games into or out of prime time during the season so that stronger matchups get the national windows. It covers Sunday, Monday, and Thursday night games, applies only during set windows of weeks, and includes minimum notice periods for fans.

This is a mechanics explainer in the Jets Insider guides library. It describes how the system works; it does not track which games have been moved in any given season. For the Jets’ dates and kickoff times, check the Jets schedule page.

What is NFL flex scheduling?

It is a procedure the NFL adopted in 2006 to promote quality matchups in prime time and to give surprise teams a chance to play their way onto a national broadcast. When the league publishes its schedule, the prime-time games in certain weeks are only tentative. As the season unfolds, the league can swap them for more attractive Sunday afternoon games.

The league states that its scheduling procedures are under continuous review and that further changes to flexible scheduling could come in the future. Treat the specifics below as the league’s current published rules, and check the league’s own procedures page when the details matter.

Which games and weeks can be flexed?

Under the league’s published procedures for 2026, flexing is available in three prime-time windows:

Sunday Night Football can be flexed up to twice between Weeks 5 and 10, and in any week from Weeks 11 through 17. Monday Night Football can be flexed in any week from Weeks 12 through 17. Thursday Night Football can be flexed up to twice between Weeks 13 and 17.

During those windows, games initially scheduled for Sunday night, Monday night, and Thursday night are tentative and subject to change. Outside them, the published prime-time games stay where they are.

How does a flex actually work?

It is a swap, not an addition. Only Sunday afternoon games — or games listed as TBD — are eligible to move into a night window. When one moves up, the game scheduled for that night moves back to Sunday afternoon.

Afternoon games can also be moved within the afternoon, between the 1:00 p.m. window and the 4:05 or 4:25 p.m. ET windows. That is the more common kind of change for most teams, and it is why a listed kickoff time can shift by three hours without the game ever going to prime time.

How much notice does the NFL give?

The league sets minimum notice periods by window:

For Sunday night games in Weeks 5 through 13, and for Monday night games in Weeks 12 through 17, the NFL will decide and announce the change no later than 12 days before the game. For Sunday night games in Weeks 14 through 17, the league will generally make the decision no later than six days before the game. For Thursday night games in Weeks 13 through 17, the league will generally make the decision no later than 21 days before the game.

The league’s own advice to ticket holders is direct: games in the flex windows are subject to change, generally at least 12 days in advance and at least six days in advance for Sundays in Weeks 14 through 17, and fans should plan accordingly.

How are flex-eligible games listed on the schedule?

The tentatively scheduled prime-time games are generally listed at 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday, 8:15 p.m. ET on Monday, and 8:00 p.m. ET on Thursday. Most Sunday games in the flex windows are listed at 1:00 p.m. ET, except games played in the Pacific or Mountain time zones, which are listed at 4:05 or 4:25 p.m. ET.

In other words, a 1:00 p.m. listing in November is the default placeholder, not a promise. It is the time most likely to hold, but it is also the time a flex moves a game away from.

What happens in Week 18?

Week 18 works differently. For the final weekend of the regular season, the league does not assign the Saturday, Sunday afternoon and Sunday night slots in advance. The Week 18 schedule is announced at the conclusion of Week 17, once the league knows which games carry playoff stakes. How those stakes are decided is covered in how NFL teams make the playoffs.

What does flexing change for a Jets fan?

Mostly, the kickoff time and the network. A flexed game is still the same opponent at the same stadium on the same weekend; what moves is the window, and with it the broadcast partner. A game moved into Sunday night goes to that window’s national broadcast; a game moved out of it drops back into the afternoon slate.

The practical habit is simple. From October onward, treat any listed kickoff in the flex windows as provisional until roughly two weeks out, and check the schedule again before booking travel around a start time. Game-by-game context for each opponent lives in the Jets Games Hub.
