Florham Park, N.J. – There’s nothing like a big, sturdy guy getting teary eyed. Former Jets guard Brandon Moore may have announced his retirement in August, but he made it official at the Jets facility today and got emotional while doing so.
Following Rex’s press conference, the 33-year-old lineman went to the podium and first thanked his family for his accomplishments. “I’m enjoying my life,” he said. “I’m enjoying my family. I have no regrets.”
Moore initially signed a one year deal with Cowboys over the summer, but chose to retire because he didn’t want to leave his wife, Regina, and two young kids, Isiah and Mikayla, at home in New Jersey.
Since retiring he’s been busy “cooking dinners, taking my kids to school, getting my son to brush his teeth in the morning, working out, doing renovations around the house.”
He jokes he won’t be doing that for long. He’s deciding his next moves.
“I love football. I’ll always be involved with football to some capacity,” Moore said. “I’m not closing any doors. I have some ideas. But for right now enjoying not having a care in the world.”
Reflecting on his years playing under Rex, Moore got choked up. “Some of the best years of my life was playing for Rex,” Moore paused, collecting himself. “Because all he wanted to do was win. We didn’t quite finish it, but we were going to die trying. I just want to tell him thank you.”
He started every game under Rex’s reign as head coach. “As a young coach coming in there are certain players you lean on and you try to build your team a certain way,” Rex said introducing Moore today. “I certainly leaned on him.”
“He’s the ultimate competitor,” Rex said. “Tough and durable. Just a great player. He knew what it took. When in doubt, we ran the ball. Everyone knew it and it never mattered.”
Rex remembers his reliability and believes he will go down as the best guard the Jets have ever had (or at least be in the conversation.)
Moore’s 10-year career with the Jets started with a spot on the practice squad and included two AFC Championship game appearances and one Pro-Bowl appearance for the 2011-2012 season. He started an impressive 142 straight games for the Jets. New York chose not to extend his contract this year and replaced him with former Steeler, Willie Colon.
He certainly holds no hard feelings towards the team. “They say that once you’re a Jet, you’re always a Jet. I just told Rex that I root harder for them now than when I was running out of the tunnel on Sundays.”
He went to the Jets v. Patriots game as a fan. He said it wasn’t weird to be at the stadium without being on the field. He got a laugh from the media when he said, “It was actually nice. I was in a nice box. It’s nice up there.”
Moore will return to MetLife this Sunday to lead the Jets off the bus when they arrive to face the Saints.
