The Jets hold the 17th pick in round two and they will certainly have an interesting assortment of players to choose from, including plenty of receivers and tight ends for you fans starving for offensive players.

Of course there will undoubtedly be a few really good defensive players available that could tempt the Jets, but it’s time for the Jets to shift their focus on getting Geno Smith some more weapons.

If the Jets were to go defense, (calm down, hear me out I’m just talking hypotheticals here) I would think it would come from this list of players, (OLBs) Jeremiah Attaochu (Georgia Tech), Demarcus Lawrence (Boise State) or Kyle Van Noy (BYU). One possible inside linebacker, Chris Borland from Wisconsin and to really stoke the ire of Jets fans, defensive ends Kony Ealy (Missouri), Scott Crichton (Oregon State) and Stephon Tuitt (Notre Dame).

Will round two finally be the round the Jets add a receiver to help Eric Decker and Jeremy Kerley get open? (JetsInsider.com Photo)

Most of those players are likely to be gone buy the time the Jets pick, maybe all of them, but if Attaochu, Lawrence or Van Noy are available it’ll make it much harder for the Jets brain trust to be happy settling on a receiver or tight end.

Eric Ebron was the first and only tight end to come off the board, which still leaves four quality tight ends left before there’s a massive drop-off. Jace Amaro (Texas-Tech) and Austin Seferian-Jenkins (University of Washington) are both likely going somewhere in the second and either of them would make a good pick for the Jets if they decided to go that route in round two, but if they can wait until round three they can target C.J. Fiedorowicz (Iowa) or Troy Niklas (Notre Dame).

As for the receivers, only five went in the first round last night, which is great news for the Jets. Many people thought there could be as many as eight or nine receivers taken in the first, but there were only five and one of them was the one player in the draft Jets fans wanted the least, Kelvin Benjamin. That still leaves at least nine prime targets that could go in round two with still almost 10, or so, more throughout the rest of the draft.

Honestly there’s not a lot of separation with these guys and once again rankings come down to personal preference, but here’s how I rank them. (Though I wouldn’t fight you for having a different order.)

Davante Adams (Fresno State)

Jordan Matthews (Vanderbilt)

Cody Latimer (Indiana)

Marquise Lee (USC)* Would be higher but I’m terrified of injuries.

Jarvis Landry (LSU)

Allen Robinson (Penn State)

Donte Moncrief (Mississippi)

Bruce Ellington (South Carolina)

Martavis Bryant (Clamson)

Some of these guys could still be available in the third, but could easily go in the second. Regardless that’s nine solid receiver options for the Jets with only 16 teams between them and their next pick. Meaning the Jets will likely have their choice between a few of these options and remember there are still more quality receivers in this draft (Josh Huff, Kevin Norwood, Jalen Saunders and more), but I don’t expect them to go in the second. Late third early fourth is where the wide receiver well will start to run a little dry.
