Assuming the Jets don’t trade up or trade down there are four players I think the Jets are targeting, hoping will fall to 18. Because I’m only guessing at what the Jets board will look like and how the board will fall I have a three-way tie for who I think the Jets covet the most if they stay at 18 and I have a fourth player who is just a notch below the top three, but expect the Jets would be plenty happen to draft.

The Jets aren’t likely to have their choice between the top three players, in fact there’s a good chance all three of them are gone by 18, but I have to think they are hoping for one of them to fall. I just have no idea how they would rank those three.

We're just hours away from the first round of the draft, who will be Rex's newest player? ( Photo)

The three players I’m talking about are wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (LSU) and cornerbacks Darqueze Dennard (Michigan State) and Kyle Fuller (Virginia Tech). If any of them are available I think they will be the pick, the chances of one of them being available seem to be decreasing exponentially as we get closer to the draft. If all three of them are gone I think the Jets will happily settle for the consolation prize of receiver Brandin Cooks (Oregon State).

There are, of course, other players you would think the Jets would consider if they were to fall, if Aaron Donald, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Anthony Barr or Zach Martin fell I think the Jets would think about making one of them the pick, more so Clinton-Dix then Donald than Barr or Martin. But they could take Martin and plug him in at guard immediately with the ultimate goal of sliding him over to tackle in the future.

I think the Jets are targeting/keeping fingers crossed for a receiver or corner, maybe a safety, but they could surprise us all. I just don’t expect that surprise to be a quarterback, offensive line (unless Martin), defensive line (unless Donald), linebacker, running back and obviously kicker or punter. Those are the only positions I’m willing to rule out, so make sure to mock me extra hard if and when they take one of those positions.

I don’t think the Jets can lose with any of the top four choices, especially not with the top three. I think Dennard is the most likely to be off the board, then Beckham and Fuller the most likely of the three to still be available. In that case I think they’d take Fuller over Cooks, but since it seems like it could be wishful thinking that any of the top three will still be there Cooks seems like the safest choice.

Thankfully we only have a few short hours left until we find out.
