Jets vs. Patriots Week 6 Preview: A Surging New England in Foxborough

The Jets finally have something to carry on the road. Sunday sends them to Foxborough for a division game against a New England team playing its best football of the season, four days after the Jets’ defense turned in the performance of their year.

The Jets (2–3) play the Patriots (3–2) on Sunday, October 18 at 1:00 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on CBS. New York arrives off a 17–12 win over Cleveland that ended a three-game losing streak. Breece Hall did not practice Wednesday or Thursday.

When and where do the Jets play the Patriots in Week 6?

Sunday, October 18 at 1:00 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, with CBS carrying the broadcast. The Patriots’ official how-to-watch listing puts the game locally on WBZ-TV Channel 4. It is the Jets’ third road game in five weeks and the first of two meetings with New England this season; the rematch is at MetLife Stadium in Week 16. Week-by-week coverage sits on the Jets game hub.

What did the win over the Browns actually prove?

That this defense can win a game on its own. The Jets sacked Deshaun Watson eight times in the rain at MetLife Stadium, and rookie edge David Bailey had three of them along with four quarterback hits and seven pressures, giving him five sacks on the season. Will McDonald IV strip-sacked Watson on fourth down and recovered the fumble to end it, and Trevin Wallace fell on a high snap that sailed past the Browns’ punter.

The offense did enough rather than much. Braelon Allen carried 24 times for 116 yards and ran in the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, and Geno Smith finished 17 of 30 for 182 yards and a 32-yard touchdown to Garrett Wilson, who caught seven passes for 104 yards. Jason Sanders made a 54-yard field goal in the rain. Aaron Glenn called it “a good team win” and said “every part had some bright moments,” which is about the right temperature for a 17–12 game in which the Jets also lost two fumbles. The full accounting is in our Week 5 recap of the Browns game.

How good are the Patriots at 3–2?

Better than the record, and trending up hard. New England opened with a 13–10 loss at Seattle and was blown out 35–6 at Jacksonville in Week 3, but it has since beaten Buffalo 29–26 on the road and buried Las Vegas 45–17 at home. That is a team that has found its offense, and quarterback Drake Maye was a full participant at practice on both Wednesday and Thursday despite a right shoulder listing. The last time these teams met, in Week 17 of last season, the Patriots won 42–10.

Which Jets are on the Week 6 injury report?

Eight players, four of whom were off the practice field on both days. Running back Breece Hall (quad), receiver Adonai Mitchell (finger), edge Joseph Ossai (ankle) and offensive lineman Dylan Parham (knee) did not participate Wednesday or Thursday. Safety Dane Belton (knee), receiver Omar Cooper Jr. (ankle) and tight end Kenyon Sadiq (concussion) were limited on both days, and linebacker Kiko Mauigoa (quad) was full on both. The club notes that Wednesday’s levels are an estimation because the Jets held a walkthrough rather than a practice.

No game designations had been issued as of the Thursday report, which carries no Friday column; the Jets’ Friday report and its Out, Doubtful and Questionable designations had not published at the time of writing. Hall has now missed practice time in four straight weeks, and Cooper is working inside the 21-day window the Jets opened this week, covered in our report on Omar Cooper Jr.’s practice window. The designations themselves are in the official Jets injury report published by newyorkjets.com.

What has to go right for the Jets in Foxborough?

Three things, in order. First, the run game has to hold up without Hall: Allen was a workhorse against Cleveland, and Isaiah Davis and Kene Nwangwu are the names behind him if the carries have to be split again, which is the kind of week where a reader is well served by knowing how an NFL depth chart works. Second, the pass rush has to travel. Eight sacks in one game is not a repeatable number, but pressure on Maye is the single clearest route to keeping the score low. Third, the Jets have to finish drives. They scored 17 points on a day their defense allowed 12, and the four-minute offense could not put the game away.

What is New England dealing with on its own report?

A long list, but mostly limited participants rather than absences. Cornerbacks Carlton Davis III (neck) and Karon Prunty (hamstring) did not practice on either day, and defensive tackle Cory Durden was added Thursday with an illness. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez was upgraded from limited to full on Thursday, and receiver A.J. Brown (ankle), running back TreVeyon Henderson (ankle) and tackles Morgan Moses (foot), Will Campbell (knee) and Marcus Bryant (ankle) were all limited on both days. As with the Jets, New England had issued no game designations at the time of writing.
