Jets vs. Dolphins Week 7 Preview: A Winless Miami Team at MetLife

Five games into a season that has produced nothing but losses, the Dolphins arrive at MetLife Stadium on Sunday as the one team on the Jets’ schedule that has looked worse than the Jets. That is the opportunity, and it is also the trap.

The Jets (2–4) host the Dolphins (0–5) on Sunday, October 25 at 1:00 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium, on CBS. Miami comes off its bye as the league’s lowest-scoring team. Breece Hall returned to limited practice Thursday after missing Wednesday with a quad injury.

When and where do the Jets play the Dolphins in Week 7?

Sunday, October 25 at 1:00 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with CBS carrying the broadcast. It is the first of two meetings with Miami this season; the rematch is in Week 12 at Hard Rock Stadium on November 29. Week-by-week coverage sits on the Jets game hub.

How bad have the Dolphins been at 0–5?

Bad enough that the Jets’ 27th-ranked scoring offense looks functional by comparison. Miami has scored 70 points in five games — 14.0 per game, 31st in the league — losing 27–13 at Las Vegas, 35–13 at San Francisco, 24–10 to Kansas City, 15–10 at Minnesota and 31–24 to Cincinnati. The Dolphins rank 31st in passing yards and 28th in total offense, and they have allowed 26.4 points a game.

The context is a roster taken apart in the offseason. Mike McDaniel was fired in January and replaced by first-year head coach Jeff Hafley; Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill were released and Jaylen Waddle was traded to Denver. Miami drew a Week 6 bye, so it arrives with 13 days of rest and not much else.

What can Miami still hurt the Jets with?

The run game, which is the one part of the teardown that did not cost them. The Dolphins rank ninth in rushing yards. Ollie Gordon leads the team with 236 yards and three touchdowns, and quarterback Malik Willis has added 186 yards and two scores on the ground. That is a live problem for a Jets defense ranked 23rd against the run, and it is how a team averaging 14 points keeps a game close into the fourth quarter.

Through the air there is far less. Willis has completed 73 of 130 passes for 849 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions, and Malik Washington leads the receivers with 23 catches for 262 yards. Willis appeared on the Week 7 injury report with a thumb injury but practiced fully on both Wednesday and Thursday.

What is actually wrong with the Jets’ offense?

The red zone, by the coordinator’s own accounting. Frank Reich said on Thursday that the Jets have scored six touchdowns on 14 trips inside the 20, a 37.5 percent rate, and named it first among the things that have to change. “The red zone again, red zone, third down, short yardage, on those, there needs to be improvement there in every way,” Reich said, per the team’s official site. “And again, as a coordinator, that starts with me.”

He was more encouraged by what happens between the 20s, where Geno Smith has thrown for 1,336 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception. Reich also pointed at availability: Adonai Mitchell, Omar Cooper Jr., Hall and Mason Taylor have missed 13 games between them. Garrett Wilson leads the team with 418 receiving yards, and Braelon Allen leads the rushing with 314 on a ground game averaging 3.6 yards a carry.

Can the pass rush decide this game on its own?

It already did once this season. The Jets sacked Deshaun Watson eight times in the Week 5 win over Cleveland, and rookie edge David Bailey has five sacks on the year after a three-sack afternoon that earned him AFC Defensive Player of the Week. The team has 17 sacks and has held opponents to 20.3 points a game, seventh in the league — the one unit on this roster performing above its record.

Against a quarterback who has thrown four interceptions and taken his share of hits behind a line that has shuffled, that matters. It kept the Jets in the game in Foxborough last week, where the defense held New England to 26 and the offense answered with four field goals in a 26–19 loss. The counterweight is that the Jets have one interception as a team, tied for the fewest in the NFL. Pressure has not turned into takeaways, and in a game both offenses are likely to struggle to score, the takeaway margin is the game.

Who is banged up going into Sunday?

Four Jets did not practice Thursday and none had a game designation yet, because the club had not issued its Friday report at the time of writing. Here is the official Week 7 report through Thursday, per the Jets’ Thursday injury report.

The one that moves the needle is Breece Hall, who sat out Wednesday and returned as a limited participant Thursday. Davis and Phillips were given veteran rest days and practiced fully Thursday. On Miami’s side, cornerback Reese Taylor (quad) and linebacker Willie Gay (illness) did not practice Thursday, and seven more Dolphins were limited.

What has to go right for the Jets?

Finish drives, and do not let Miami hang around into the fourth quarter. Turning two of Sunday’s red-zone trips into touchdowns instead of Jason Sanders field goals is the difference between a comfortable afternoon and the kind of finish that has gone against the Jets all year. Aaron Glenn’s defense should be able to make Willis uncomfortable; whether this offense can put a winless team away is the actual question, and it has not answered it yet.

Recent history pulls the other way. Miami swept the Jets in 2025, winning 27–21 in Week 4 and 34–10 at MetLife in Week 14. A third straight loss in this series, to an 0–5 team, would say more than the record already does.
