Jets-Raiders Week 8 Recap: A 439-Yard Day and a 38–33 Loss

The Jets lost a game they led for most of three quarters, and they lost it the way a 2–6 team loses: with the ball in the air and the season already gone sideways. Las Vegas beat them 38–33 at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, scoring on back-to-back fourth-quarter drives and then kicking a 53-yard field goal inside the final 30 seconds. New York outgained the Raiders by more than 100 yards and still fell to a third straight defeat. Full game coverage sits on the Jets games hub.

The Raiders beat the Jets 38–33 in Week 8 at MetLife Stadium. New York outgained Las Vegas 439–333 but went 2-of-6 in the red zone, allowed a 95-yard kickoff-return touchdown, and lost when Geno Smith threw an interception in the end zone. The Jets are 2–6.

What decided Jets-Raiders in Week 8?

Red-zone efficiency and a special-teams touchdown decided it. The Jets moved the ball almost at will and could not finish: they reached the Las Vegas red zone six times and scored touchdowns on two of those trips, per the club’s own game recap, while the Raiders went 4-of-4 inside the 20. That gap is the whole margin. Add Dylan Laube’s 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter — a score the Jets defense never had a chance to contest — and a team that won the yardage battle 439–333 still trailed when it mattered. Kirk Cousins threw three touchdown passes and ran for a fourth. Two of those throws went to Brock Bowers, who finished with seven catches for 92 yards.

The fourth quarter turned on one screen. With Las Vegas trailing by two, Cousins hit Ashton Jeanty for 45 yards to the Jets’ 13, and five plays later Jalen Nailor caught a 2-yard touchdown, putting the Raiders up 35–30 with 11:33 left. Jason Sanders answered with a 31-yard field goal to make it 35–33, but Matt Gay’s 53-yarder in the closing seconds pushed the lead back to five. On the last drive, the Jets reached the Las Vegas 35 before Smith’s throw into the end zone was intercepted by Jeremy Chinn.

What does the box score say?

It says the Jets won every category except the two that count. New York held the edge in total yards, rushing yards, and first downs; Las Vegas won the red zone, the turnover column, and the scoreboard.

Smith finished 20-of-32 for 290 yards, two touchdowns, and the closing interception. Cousins was 19-of-26 for 247 yards and three scores. The Jets ran for 166 yards to Las Vegas’ 95 and led in first downs 26–22. Jamien Sherwood led the defense with 14 tackles and Dane Belton added 12, per the team’s recap, and Will McDonald IV dropped Cousins for a 9-yard loss.

Which Jets played well in the loss?

Braelon Allen and Adonai Mitchell both posted career highs. Allen carried 21 times for 147 yards and a 21-yard touchdown, the most productive game of his career and the clearest sign yet that this offense runs better when he is the primary back; his season is tracked on the Braelon Allen player page. Mitchell caught seven passes for 142 yards and a touchdown, numbers no Jets receiver had reached this season. Garrett Wilson added six catches for 83 yards, including a 15-yard gain on the final drive, and Isaiah Williams caught an 18-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Head coach Aaron Glenn was direct afterward. “It’s an understatement to say we’re all disappointed in the way this one ended and not getting a victory in this game,” he said. The offense that produced 439 yards is not the problem it was a month ago, which is its own kind of frustration: our Week 8 preview argued the margins were slim enough that one special-teams play could decide it, and one did.

What does 2-6 mean for the Jets’ season?

It means the playoff math is effectively finished and the next nine days are about the trade deadline. At 2–6 with the November 10 deadline approaching and a trip to Kansas City on Sunday, the Jets are closer to a seller than a buyer, and the three straight losses — after the 28–25 defeat in Miami a week earlier — have removed whatever cushion the Week 5 win over Cleveland bought. Las Vegas, meanwhile, snapped a four-game skid and moved to 4–4. The full official account of Sunday’s game is in the Jets game recap on newyorkjets.com.
