Jets vs. Chiefs Week 9 Preview: A 2–6 Team Walks Into Arrowhead

The Jets land in Kansas City carrying a three-game losing streak, their best offensive stretch of the season and a wide receiver in concussion protocol. It is the kind of week that makes a 2–6 team hard to read: the point totals are climbing, the losses are not stopping, and the opponent is a 5–2 Chiefs team that has suddenly dropped two straight.

The Jets (2–6) play the Chiefs (5–2) on Sunday, November 8 at 1:00 p.m. ET at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, on CBS. New York has lost three straight; Kansas City has dropped two in a row, both on the road. Garrett Wilson remains in concussion protocol.

What time do the Jets play the Chiefs, and where?

Sunday, November 8 at 1:00 p.m. ET at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, with CBS on the regional broadcast. For the rest of this week’s game coverage, start at the Jets game hub.

How did the Jets get to 2–6?

By losing close games while the offense got better. New York scored a season-high 33 points in the Week 8 loss to Las Vegas and still lost 38–33, the kind of result covered in full in our Week 8 Raiders recap. Geno Smith went 22-of-30 for 290 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, and completed 5-of-10 throws of 20-plus air yards for 142 yards — the most by any quarterback that week and the ninth-most in a game this season.

The supporting cast has been the surprise. Six different Jets have gone over 100 yards in a game this season, the most since 2010. Braelon Allen has cleared 100 scrimmage yards in four straight games and, since Week 4, has rushed for 504 yards — second in the NFL behind Tampa Bay’s Bucky Irving at 548.

Who is on the Jets’ Week 9 injury report?

Nine Jets appeared on Thursday’s report and three did not practice. The club had not published a Friday report or any game statuses when this preview went up, so the table below is Thursday’s official document; the running picture lives on our Jets injury report hub.

Wilson matters most. He took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Raiders safety Jeremy Chinn on the second-to-last play of the Week 8 loss — a hit that drew an unnecessary roughness flag — felt the effects Monday and entered protocol. Glenn has called Wilson and Phillips day-to-day and said nothing more specific. Breece Hall, by contrast, practiced in full on Thursday for the first time since hurting his quad and said he is ready to go. The full document is on the club’s site: the Jets’ Thursday Week 9 injury report.

What makes the Chiefs beatable right now?

Two straight road losses and a run game that has stopped moving. Kansas City lost 20–3 at Seattle and 28–24 at Denver after opening 5–0, and Kenneth Walker III — the reigning Super Bowl MVP, signed in free agency and still third in the NFL with 770 rushing yards — averaged 2.6 yards per carry against the Seahawks and 3.3 against the Broncos.

The passing game has not been the problem. Patrick Mahomes, in his ninth year as the starter, averages 256.4 passing yards a game and threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns in Week 8. Travis Kelce leads the team with 43 targets, 29 catches and 410 yards, fifth in the NFL, and could play his 200th regular-season game Sunday. Rookie back Emmett Johnson put up 128 receiving yards at Denver on a 73-yard touchdown, the longest by a rookie running back in franchise history. The defense remains a top-five scoring unit at 18.7 points allowed per game.

Which matchups decide this game?

Start with the Jets’ tight ends. New York ran a season-high 13 plays in 13 personnel in Week 8, with Mason Taylor on the field for 39 snaps (61 percent) and Kenyon Sadiq for 31 (48 percent), the two highest totals in the group. Sadiq has 186 yards and a touchdown; Taylor has 136 yards and two scores. If Wilson cannot go, those heavy sets and Allen’s legs become the plan rather than a wrinkle.

The other one is Geno Smith away from MetLife. Smith has posted a passer rating above 100 in five of his last six road games, and Glenn said Wednesday that he is “really commanding the offense the way you want a quarterback to do that.” Against a defense allowing 18.7 a game, the Jets will need the deep shots that worked in Week 8 to keep working.

What has to go right for the Jets at Arrowhead?

They have to finish, which is the thing they have not done. The Week 8 loss came after the offense scored on its first six possessions. Glenn was blunt about the opponent this week: “We know exactly who this team is; we know exactly what they’re about.” He has also spent the week answering questions about his own standing, which we covered in Glenn’s comments on his job security.

The margin is thin and the roster thinner than a month ago, with T’Vondre Sweat now on injured reserve. This is not a week for predictions; it is a week to see whether a team that keeps scoring can finally close.
