Florham Park, NJ – Josh McCown has had the best season of his career, but after being hit repeatedly by the Denver Broncos his 38-year-old body couldn’t take the punishment anymore. The Broncos got to McCown early and often, knocking him out of the game briefly in the first half only for the veteran quarterback to come back into the game and have his season ended after suffering a broken left hand.

“I knew when it happened something wasn’t right,” McCown said immediately after the game. Today Todd Bowles confirmed that McCown will require surgery and will miss the remainder of the season. With the Jets at 5-8 and three tough games to go this news will only impact the 2017 Jets in the sense that they will go from unlikely to win anymore games this year to highly unlikely to win anymore games this year.

Today Bowles said that Bryce Petty will start in place of McCown, leaving Christian Hackenberg as the backup to Petty.

“He’s been taking notes on the sideline. He understands what’s going to come, but it’s an opportunity for him,” Bowles said of Petty. “He’ll get the majority of reps this week and he’ll be well-prepared to play in a game on Sunday.”

Petty will now get a chance to show what he’s capable of and he will have his work cut out for him as the Saints, Chargers and Patriots are left on the schedule. Now would seem to be a perfect time for the Jets to play Hackenberg and see what he can do, but it’s clear that the Jets still don’t think he’s ready which of course leads to the question, if he’s not ready now will he ever be ready?

Maybe Petty will start next week then Hackenberg will get a chance in one or both of the final two games, but unless Petty gets hurt you shouldn’t count on seeing Hackenberg this season.
