The Jets open the 2026 season on Sunday at Nissan Stadium, and the schedule handed them a storyline before it handed them a game. Robert Saleh, fired in New York midway through the 2024 season, is now the head coach in Tennessee. Aaron Glenn, beginning his second year, walks into his predecessor’s new building with a rebuilt quarterback room and a defense whose play-calling he has taken over himself.
The short version: the Jets play the Titans at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 13, at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, on CBS. Geno Smith starts at quarterback, Breece Hall practiced in full all week, and the only genuinely unsettled job on the roster is placekicker.
Kickoff times, channels and results for all seventeen games sit on the 2026 Jets schedule.
Why does this opener carry more than the usual Week 1 weight?
Because both sidelines are staffed by people with something to answer for. Saleh went 20-36 in New York and never reached the postseason; Glenn took over a roster mid-teardown and is now being asked to show the rebuild has a direction. Tennessee also holds the more recent draft trophy in Cam Ward, the No. 1 overall pick in 2025, while the Jets counter with edge rusher David Bailey, the No. 2 selection in April.
Who starts at quarterback, and what changes around him?
Geno Smith starts, in an offense run by first-year coordinator Frank Reich. Reich spent 2025 as interim head coach at Stanford and has spent this summer trying to dial Smith down rather than up. “He has a streak of aggressiveness in him that I hope he never loses, because that’s what it takes to be great at the quarterback position,” Reich said on Thursday. Smith throws behind an offensive line returning four of five starters, which is the sort of continuity the Jets have rarely been able to sell in September. More on the quarterback’s long road back is on Geno Smith’s player page.
Is Breece Hall healthy enough to carry a full workload?
Every signal the team has given says yes. Hall was a full participant on Wednesday and again on Thursday, the clearest indication yet that the groin strain he picked up late in training camp is behind him. We covered the first report in detail when Hall returned as a full participant earlier this week. What the team has not said is how many touches that translates into on a hot afternoon in Nashville, and no one should read “full participant” as a snap count.
Which Jets are on the Week 1 injury report?
Four names carry a designation and two of them did not practice at all. Edge Joseph Ossai (foot) and wide receiver Tim Patrick (groin) missed both Wednesday and Thursday. Cornerback D’Angelo Ponds (calf) was limited on both days. Running back Isaiah Davis (knee), Hall (groin) and tight end Kenyon Sadiq (groin) were full participants twice over. The Friday report, which is where game-status designations appear, had not been published at the time of writing. Running status for the season is maintained on the Jets injury hub.
Who is kicking, and why is that still a question on Friday?
The Jets have not said, and as of Thursday afternoon they were not pretending otherwise. Blake Grupe, claimed off waivers from Indianapolis in late August, is on the active roster; Jason Sanders, who won the summer competition and was then released and re-signed to the practice squad, is still kicking alongside him. “We’re just in another competition, that’s all it is,” special teams coordinator Chris Banjo said, adding that on the decision itself, “time will tell.” We laid out the full sequence when the Jets reached Week 1 without naming a kicker. In a game two rebuilding teams are likely to keep close, that is not a trivial loose end.
What does the Titans roster look like from a Jets angle?
Familiar, and deliberately so. Tennessee’s defensive front includes John Franklin-Myers and Solomon Thomas, both former Jets, with Michael Carter and Tony Adams also on the roster. The traffic ran the other way in March, when New York acquired defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat from Tennessee in exchange for Jermaine Johnson. Sweat now lines up against the team that drafted him, in the stadium where he played his home games.
What happened the last time the Jets played in Nashville?
They won, 24-17, on September 15, 2024. Hall produced from both backfield roles that afternoon, with 62 rushing yards on 14 carries and a receiving touchdown among five catches for 52 yards, while edge rusher Will McDonald IV recorded three sacks. Almost nothing else about either roster is the same, so the result is trivia rather than form — but it is a reminder that this building has not been an especially hostile one for the Jets.
How do you watch the game?
CBS carries it at 1:00 p.m. ET, which is one of a franchise-record fifteen one-o’clock kickoffs on the Jets’ 2026 schedule. Regional coverage, streaming routes and radio options are set out in our guide to how to watch Jets games.
