FLORHAM PARK, NJ – The biggest question mark on the Jets roster is still, as always, at quarterback but whoever the quarterback is, on any given day, we know that they will be thankful for a deep stable of talented receivers to work with. With Brandon Marshall now with the Giants, Eric Decker and Quincy Enunwa become the undisputed leaders of the group sitting at the top of the depth chart, but Robby Anderson hopes to make a case for becoming a reliable and dangerous weapon for his quarterback(s) to use.

After signing as a undrafted free agent last year, Anderson made reporters take notice of his speed smoothness immediately but Jalin Marshall and Charone Peake seemed more ready to contribute in their rookie years. By the time training camp finished and the preseason began Anderson’s smooth strides had him passing the other rookies on the depth chart and this year Anderson hopes to build off of last season and show the NFL world he’s here to get better and make a name for himself.

“Man, I’m extremely excited for this season,” Anderson said. “You know, it’s a new year, new start, I got a lot of experience under my belt. I’m in a new system, new offense and I’m just extremely excited to takeoff this season. My teammates, we’ve been working hard, new chemistry, there’s a new demeanor around here. I’m just excited for the season.”

Since he brought up the new system, we might as well talk about that. One of the biggest challenges for Anderson will be adjusting to the west-coast-offense. Anderson’s best skill is his speed and deep-threat ability, but in the new system, and especially with Josh McCown likely to start the season at quarterback, Anderson is going to have to develop his ability to run short, quick routes and use his speed after the catch.

“I’m picking it up good,” Anderson said. “It’s a more pass-happy offense, so you know that fits me good and I’m learning as we go, getting used to everything and building with a new quarterback. Building that chemistry, so I’m just very excited.”

He’s right that, of course, a new pass-happy offense fits him, but again it will be crucial for him to develop his short game to really take off and become the complete receiver he wants to be. He’s also still benefiting from his relationship with Marshall even though they are now former teammates, one of the most shocking things for young players to learn about what it takes to become a great NFL player is just how much work it takes to take care of your body properly and how to do everything you can to make sure you stay as healthy as possible. Anderson spent a lot of time this offseason working out with Marshall and that was the main focus of Marshall’s teachings.

“Getting healthy, you know. Learning new things, new tricks to the trade,” Anderson said. “You know, I was working with Brandon, he was teaching me new things about my body and learning knew ways and learning the biggest thing about being a great football player is taking care of your body and feeling good out there. Without being healthy, you can’t perform to your full abilities so that’s one of the biggest things I’ve picked up this offseason and I’ve really been focused on.”

Of course Anderson still has that problem of his offseason arrest, and possible suspension, hanging over his head but he gave the standard, “can’t really get into details about that,” and “it’s a pending legal situation,” quotes to reporters. For now, he can’t worry about that. He just has to focus on staying healthy, learning the new offense and developing his game. If he does all of that, he can help this entire offense takeoff.
